Patriot Act / Homeland Stupidity / KGB

I'm confused, who is the evil empire and which side are they on?
It appears the United States of America after 50 years embroiled in a Cold War, has adopted the philosophy of the opposition?
Can we wave the flag of Democracy and mock it's core values?

I was surprised the United States chose the name Homeland Security as the former USSR chose a similar name : Committee for State Security, both agencies provide security,or one would assume from their titles. The USSR agency is better known as an acronym simply: KGB

On the surface neither of these agencies evoke fear and sound somewhat generic. It's not known the full extent of espionage associated under the Committee for State Security as most of their work was done in secrecy. We do know that the citizens of the USSR feared the KGB. I find it odd the citizens would have such fear of a agency providing security.

The USA Patriot Act: is also an acronym and so has nothing to do with the USA or patriotism as the name implies (see below) . More of word play like Weapons of Mass Destruction, really wasn't there at all. It could also mean:
Unconstitutional= Surveillance= Against=the People= of America= To =Repent =Into= Oppression= & Tyranny but that's nonsense!!!
The actual abbreviation would be UASABPATRTIAOT but this lacks the poetic license of the Bush Administration and USA Patriot Act makes the legislation easier for Americans to digest. Just another play on words.
It does however, legalizes the same Unconstitutional espionage in the USA.

We don't know what laws they're secretly violating and probably never will.
The big question is; why should we have a US Constitution if Congress can override our rights.
Sounds to me like maybe we need to go back to 1776 and start over!!!

The KGB spyed on the the citizens of the USSR with impunity. The Patriot Act violates the 4th amendment to the US Constitution of "Illegal Search and Seizures".
The Homeland Security Act interfaces public information with the CIA/FBI/Secret Service information gained from reading our mail, listening to our phone calls, and monitoring e-mails which are all unconstitutional without court orders according to the 4th Amendment.

The following information is from wikipedia the on-line encyclopedia. Editing is a product of this blog. If you wish you may access the materials in their entirety on line

The USA PATRIOT Act, commonly known as the "patriot act", is a statute enacted by the United States Government and signed into law by President George W. Bush on October 26, 2001. The contrived acronym stands for Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001 (Public Law Pub.L. 107-56).

The Act increases the ability of law enforcement agencies to search telephone, e-mail communications, medical, financial, and other records; eases restrictions on foreign intelligence gathering within the United States; expands the Secretary of the Treasury’s authority to regulate financial transactions, particularly those involving foreign individuals and entities; and broadens the discretion of law enforcement and immigration authorities in detaining and deporting immigrants suspected of terrorism-related acts. The act also expands the definition of terrorism to include domestic terrorism, thus enlarging the number of activities to which the USA PATRIOT Act’s expanded law enforcement powers can be applied.

The Act was passed by wide margins in both houses of Congress and was supported by members of both the Republican and Democratic parties. Opponents of the law have criticized its authorization of indefinite detentions of immigrants; searches through which law enforcement officers search a home or business without the owner’s or the occupant’s permission or knowledge; the expanded use of National Security Letters, which allows the FBI to search telephone, e-mail, and financial records without a court order; and the expanded access of law enforcement agencies to business records, including library and financial records. Since its passage, several legal challenges have been brought against the act, and Federal courts have ruled that a number of provisions are unconstitutional.

Homeland Stupidity Act 2002

In the United States

In the United States, the concept of "homeland security" extends and recombines responsibilities of several government agencies and entities, including the United States National Guard, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the United States Coast Guard, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, the United States Secret Service, the Transportation Security Administration, and Civil Air Patrol.

The George W. Bush administration consolidated many of these activities under the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), a new cabinet department established as a result of the Homeland Security Act of 2002. However, much of the nation's homeland security activity remains outside of DHS; for example, the FBI and CIA are not part of the Department, and other agencies such as the Department of Defense and Department of Health and Human Services play a significant role in certain aspects of homeland security. Homeland security is coordinated at the White House by the Homeland Security Council, currently headed by John Brennan.

KGB: translated means Committe for State Security

The KGB (КГБ) is the common abbreviation for the Russian: About this sound Комитет государственной безопасности (Komitet gosudarstvennoy bezopasnosti or Committee for State Security). It was the national security agency of the Soviet Union from 1954 until 1991, and its premier internal security, intelligence, and secret police organization during that time.

The contemporary State Security Agency of the Republic of Belarus uses the Russian name KGB. Most of the KGB archives remain classified, yet two on-line sources are available.

History

Occasionally, the KGB would secretly murder citizens under the order of Stalin. The Cheka was established to defend the October Revolution and the nascent Bolshevik state from its enemies—principally the monarchist White Army. To ensure the Bolshevik régime's survival, it suppressed counter-revolution with domestic terror and international deception.

Suppressing ideological subversion

Monument to KGB victims, Vilnius, Lithuania.

During the Cold War, the KGB actively suppressed "ideological subversion"—unorthodox political and religious ideas and the espousing dissidents. In 1967, the suppression increased under new KGB Chairman Yuri Andropov, who said all dissent threatened the Soviet state—including anti-Communist religious movements. Most arrested dissidents were sentenced to indefinite terms in Gulag-administered forced labour camps—where their dissension lacked the strength it might have had in public. Moreover, Yale University archive documents record that suppressing "ideological subversion" was the principal preoccupation of Yuri Andropov and Vitali Fedorchuk when each was KGB Chairman
